About Boot Jack Cattle

A sign for Boot Jack Cattle describes the cattle's multi-trait excellence, saying they are genetically driven to succeed

A Family-Run Montana Cattle Operation With Over 50 Years of Excellence

Since the 1970s, Boot Jack Cattle has focused on elite cow families to produce cutting-edge genetics that are balanced for EPDs/data, phenotype, pedigree, function, and performance.

Our History

Paul Haugen was born into the Boot Jack operation and learned great livestock lessons from his father, Cliff, who was considered a master breeder of genetics. Cliff adopted weighing calves in 1956, embraced the early use of artificial insemination, and influenced breeders around the world.

In 1974, Paul got his own Red Angus membership and a heifer to start a herd he called “The Red Dimension” during his 4-H and FFA days. He earned numerous awards during that time, including Star State Farmer. Paul operated under the Red Dimension name, producing many show champions and some of the top-selling bulls of the breed.

In 1998, Cliff passed away, and Paul added 13 of the top cows from Cliff’s original Boot Jack herd to add to his own. He assumed the Boot Jack name to carry on the family legacy.

The unique thing about the 1998 dispersal was that many of those cow families are still the most sought-after today. They include:
  • Blockana (foundation of Feddes).
  • Bonnebell (foundation in Pieper, Berwald, Witherspoon, etc.).
  • Cherabell (foundation in Twedt’s dam of Relentless).
  • Emu-Mar (Damar foundation that name changed to Mimi W085, etc.).
  • Goldi.
  • Lakina.
  • Lakota.
  • Lana.
  • Mattie (Leachman foundation, etc.).
  • Tidy Bee (dam of Rambler).
  • Tilly (started Hi Ho lineage and foundation at C-Bar, etc.).
  • Tina at Twedt.
  • Stony (foundation for C-Bar, etc.).

Our Breeding Philosophy

Today, Boot Jack Cattle is still identifying and stacking elite genetics with a foundation rooted in top cow families who are multi-dimensional for type, data, and pedigree.

We’ve used embryo transfer since 1990, DNA from implication, multiple data systems, and that good old-fashioned innate “cow sense” that comes from decades of working with the breed.

Our cattle excel in:

  • Actual data (performance and scan).
  • Red Angus EPDs for multi-trait balance backed by DNA.
  • $Profit system evaluation.
  • The eye appeal to be the front-pasture type.

Our genetics are offered in numerous sales around the country.
